Abstract

Salvadoran immigrants have lived in New Jersey for more than 60 years. The civil war in El Salvador forced many to make the difficult decision to flee their country in search of security in the United States. According to the 2020 Census, approximately 78,000 Salvadorans live in New Jersey. However, a complete history of this community has not been made.

This article aims to discover some of the reasons why Salvadorans were attracted to New Jersey and highlight their positive impact on the state’s history. The article includes a list of organizations led by Salvadorans, a map that shows cities with large Salvadoran populations, as well as biographies and personal stories.
